Finally the clear signs of a wet Spring season over the Brazilian Coffee Belt!

| November 4, 2014

article-image-2014-11-04After a week of plentiful rains over the Arabica plantations in Brazil’s South East, another cold/rain front is on the way for this weekend.

The flowerings have opened in an intense manner and this will probably contribute to a very uniform maturation.

Additional residual flowerings will follow to support the crop volume to be harvested in June/July for 2015 onwards.

The basic fact, is that whatever the crop forecasts made back in April and May/14, have been preserved by the “Just in Time“ rains.

The coffee plantations are in the top of the rainfall benefit chain, if these remain constant thru Spring and into summer, a reasonable crop should be expected.

If volume will be enough is still too early to estimate but with an intense and concentrated flowering, quality is on the right track.

The situation regarding water resources, basins, rivers and wells is still critical, it will take another couple of years with normal rainfall to bring these back to acceptable levels.

Irrigated plantations are in the list of endangered areas as 90% of the irrigation pivots have been sealed, these plantations in the Cerrado now depend 100% on rainfall.

It is still an uphill battle but the trend indicates normal and enough rains for Arabica coffee in Brazil from now onwards.
